Supreme Court to hear case challenging Chicago Handgun Ban

Posted in Shooting on October 16th, 2009 by Arthur – 1 Comment

Chicago residents are challenging the city’s long-time ban on handguns.

“On Monday, the Supreme Court will begin its 2009-2010 term, and on the docket is the case of Chicago residents who are challenging the constitutionality of the city’s hand gun laws, which ban residents within the city limits from having guns, even in their own homes.”

“When I’m at home, I can’t even protect myself there. This house here has been broken into at least three times only a week ago,” the retired maintenance engineer told ABC News. “It’s the times that we live in, and long ago, when the guns were taken away from us in ‘82, ‘83, it wasn’t so bad back then, but times have changed. … Everybody is in danger now, in these days.”

We thank the good people of the National Rifle Association and attorney Alan Gura for their struggles on behalf of individual constitutional gun liberties.

The right of the people…

Musical Interlude: Gunpowder and Lead

Miranda Lambert is not your typical famous singer. She has her own way of dealing with relationship issues.

“Lambert also made her love for guns obvious in those albums. She estimates she owns between eight and 10 guns, some of which were on the tour bus. Lambert’s firearms come up in nearly every interview, but she said she doesn’t mind talking about them.

“I like guns,” she said. “I have pistols (with wings) tattooed to my forearm, so when I got that, I kind of asked for it.”

Lambert also owns several bows. She hunts deer and has even cleaned one before, but she called the experience “gross.”

“It stinks, but I’m not squeamish,” she said. “My dad used to raise hogs and rabbits. We would kill ‘em and butcher everything ourselves. I was always the one out there looking at it.

“It’s opening week (for bow-hunting deer) right now in Oklahoma. I’d rather be in the woods, but I’m so proud of the record that I want to keep promoting it.”

*Be still my heart*

“I’m goin’ home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
He wants a fight well now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man?
I’m going to show him what a little girls made of:
Gunpowder and lead!

His fist is big, but my gun’s bigger
He’ll find out when I pull the trigger!”

If your business is hunting or fishing, business has been good.

Kudos to hunters and fishermen that helped the economy and contributed to conservation.

“Nationwide, the hunting and fishing industry have contributed $336 million to wildlife and education.

The money is collected through taxes on ammunition, firearms and other hunting equipment – - – also through licenses.

Biologists say the (deer herds are) healthy now but without regulating the population, we could run into problems.

“Increased deer populations lead to increased deer-vehicle collisions, increased property damage in the form of shrubs and things like that and also leads to less healthy deer populations and lower health overall for the deer,” said Colin Carpenter, DNR Biologist.”

Tips for camping in the cold

Posted in Camping on October 7th, 2009 by Arthur – Be the first to comment

coldcamping

As North America prepares for another record cold winter *darn you Al Gore!*, you may find it useful to remember the basics for camping in the cold.

“Stay dry. Sounds like a no-brainer, but when you don’t have a house, car or camper in which to take refuge, this requires some preventative strategy. Your clothing should be synthetic fibers that shed moisture. Cotton does the opposite, so leave it at home. Have rain gear with you. And prepare your tent site. Find a place that doesn’t turn into a gully if the rain gets heavy. If you fear water may flow down to your site, dig a water trough around your tent to divert runoff and keep it from coming underneath. Keep your sleeping bag dry; if you think your hike may involve getting rained on, be sure to wrap your sleeping bag in a trash bag or some other waterproof sack before it goes into your backpack.

Stay hydrated. Water does the body good. And hot drinks warm your core temperature.

Eat fatty foods before going to bed. Again, to help your body stay warm.

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you, slows things down and makes you colder. Even if alcohol makes you feel warmer, don’t be fooled.

Get into your sleeping bag when you’re warm. It’s easier to stay warm than it is to get warm. Also, for the same reasons, put on extra layers before you get cold.

Make a hot water bottle. Got a Nalgene? Or some other water bottle? Boil some water, fill the bottle and put the bottle in your sleeping bag. Make sure it’s sealed tight so it doesn’t leak. This will warm up your bag. If you wear pants to sleep, you can keep the bottle in the bag with you to help stay warm. A hot fireside rock wrapped in a shirt can do the same thing, but be careful with that one.

Share a tent. A tent that has the maximum amount of people that it’s designed to shelter can be significantly warmer inside than outside. Body heat, plus the warm exhales of your breathing, will help keep the inside of a tent warmer. And that trash bag to keep your sleeping bag dry? Slip it over the bottom of your bag to help insulate the bag’s footwell.

Don’t hold it. If you have to pee, take care of business. If you don’t, your body will expend heat trying to keep the fluids in your bladder at body temperature. If it’s really cold outside, have a pee bottle inside so you don’t have to go out. Ladies, bring a funnel. Make sure the bottle is sealed tight when you’re done.

Wear a hat. Something like a knit cap or beanie. You lose a lot of heat through your head. A hat will retain that heat.”

748-Pound Shark

Now this is a catch…you can tell by the TEETH MARKS ON THE BOAT.

“FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A massive shark was caught off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, and it was all captured on video.

A group of friends were fishing about 18 miles off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale Sunday when they stumbled across 10-foot-long, 750-pound shark feeding on a swordfish.

Jamie Bunn, who videotaped the event, watched as his three friends tried to capture the creature.

“I vividly remember the quote ‘We might as well get this thing. Someone’s dying today,’”

The carcass was butchered and distributed for eating…well done!
